Abu Simbel Temples, located near the border with Sudan, are among Egypt’s most impressive ancient monuments. The Abu Simbel Temples were originally built and carved into the mountainside during the reign of Pharaoh Ramses II in the 13th century BC. The larger of the two, the Great Temple, is dedicated to Ramses II himself and features four colossal statues of the pharaoh at its entrance. The second, smaller temple, known as the Temple of Hathor, was dedicated to Queen Nefertari, Ramses II’s favorite wife, and the goddess Hathor.
Upon arrival at the Abu Simbel Temple, you will have ample time to explore both temples. You can marvel at the intricate carvings inside, which depict scenes of Ramses II’s military victories, as well as religious rituals honoring the gods. Don’t miss the chance to observe the breathtaking phenomenon of the solar alignment, which occurs twice a year when sunlight illuminates the inner sanctuary of the Great Temple, all set against the backdrop of breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Guided tours are available on-site, providing deeper insights into the historical and architectural significance of the temples. You will also have time to stroll around the surrounding area and take in the stunning views of Lake Nasser, the largest man-made lake in the world, created by the construction of the Aswan High Dam.
