Saqqara Necropolis

 

Saqqara, the first large-scale necropolis in Egypt’s capital and pyramid field.it has been an important historical site for 5,000 years. We can find the small square tombs (mastabas) of the kings of the First . Second Dynasties in this vast area about 20 miles south of Cairo. Djoser, the first king of the Third Dynasty.It commissione his minister and chief engineer to build the first stone monument in Egypt.

 

Where is the Step Pyramid?

The Pyramid of Djoser, also we know as the Step Pyramid, is located in the Saqqara Necropolis.

The pyramid consists of six steps. Inside the pyramid there are galleries and wells dug directly into the rock, where deposits of mummies of the royal family .

It is famous for the white and turquoise ceramics that they find it inside the pyramid . The very heavy pink granite slabs that covered the burial chamber.

Also in Saqqara is the tomb of Mehu, which the public enjoyed seeing for the first time since its discovery in 1940.

Where is Saqqara Necropolis located?

Saqqara Necropolis is an exceptional archaeological site located a few kilometers south of Cairo and about fifteen kilometers from the Giza Plateau. It is the largest of its kind in Egypt. It is on the western bank of the Nile River and is about 8 kilometers long. A tour of the Egyptian tomb complex dating back to ancient times is a marvel for cultural visitors, archaeologists and aspiring Egyptologists.

 

The Saqqara Serapeum

The Serapeum, which explores discovered in Saqqara pyramid.It is another must-see attraction in Saqqara. It was an underground burial chamber for the Apis bull.

They raised sacred bulls in the Temple of Ptah in Memphis during their lifetime.

they were then mummified and transported to the Serapeum for burial in stone sarcophagi. This practice has been going on for more than 1,300 years.

Then Memphis’s historic cemetery

The ancient cemetery of Memphis extends 7 kilometers into the Western Desert above the cultivated area of the Nile Valley. It is the final resting place of dozens of pharaohs, their families, administrators, generals, and sacred animals.

It is likely that Saqqara, the god of death, is the inspiration for the name. In ancient times . the pharaohs of the Old Kingdom buried inside the eleven main pyramids, while their subjects were buried in hundreds of smaller tombs.

With the exception of the Step Pyramid. The majority of the area had been buried in sand since Roman times, when its inhabitants abandoned it. Until Egyptologist Auguste Mariette discovered the Serapeum in the mid-19th century.

The last discovery was in July 2018, when they exhumed the remains of the mummification laboratory, which included five mummies in their coffins.

Then Dahshur pyramids

The Dahshur Necropolis contains two of the best-preserved pyramids in Egypt, which they built during the reign of King Sneferu (2613-2589 BC).

Founder of the Fourth Dynasty and father of Pharaoh Khufu.

The Leaning Pyramid and the Red Pyramid in Dahshur are rich evidence of the architectural development .That led to the construction of the Great Pyramid of Khufu and his companions on the Giza Plateau.

Where are the Dahshur Pyramids?

Then The village of Dahshur, about 40 kilometers southwest of Cairo, marks the southern end of the vast pyramid field that begins in Giza. Excavations at Dahshur revealed the remains of seven pyramids. As well as extensive tomb complexes built for queens and nobles from Memphis’s ancient capital until the Middle Kingdom’s thirteenth dynasty. From Saqqara, you can see the curved pyramid of Dahshur on the horizon, allowing you to visit both sites in a single day.

-First The Bent Pyramid of Dahshur

Sneferu Ed clearly marks a departure from the traditional “step” pyramid design and is the first pyramid with smooth sides. During the reign of the Pharaoh. They built the Bent pyramid. Many historians and archaeologists believe that the angled sides were part of the original design.while others believe that the builders of this pyramid realized. They were working on a steep slope . Quickly switched to a more gentle slope for the rest of the building.

-Second The Red Pyramid of Dahshur

The Red Pyramid was the world’s first “true” smooth-sided pyramid. The Red Pyramid. like the Bent Pyramid. They built during the reign of Pharaoh Sneferu. Many historians believe that Pharaoh Sneferu was the owner of the pyramid.
